Visitors won’t have to watch BBC 2’s Lambing Live to catch sight of a lamb being born because The BIG Sheep’s maternity wing during February half term will be full of resident ewes waiting to give birth and you may even be lucky enough to witness the magic of one of our little woolly lambs enter the world! Last year many visitors were amazed as they watched the ewes give birth right before them with Hayley and Amy, our resident midwifery team, on duty to assist any ewe’s experiencing difficult births or those giving birth to twins and triplets. The team has helped deliver hundreds of lambs over the years and head midwife Hayley says, “Some adults and children have never seen a ewe give birth and it is fantastic to witness the sheer look of wonderment on their faces when a new lamb is born.” It’s not always plain sailing for the midwifery team as some births can be fraught and sometimes risky business bringing with it a rollercoaster ride of sleepless nights, complicated births, orphans and adoptions. Some ewes refuse to bond with their off-spring leaving the team to hand-rear them but they are never short of little helpers says Hayley. “All our orphan and rejected lambs are bottle fed by visitors in our daily bottle feeding shows and children adore the experience of holding a bottle while the lambs suck greedily.” Of all our shows, the lamb feeding shows are the most popular for photographs with parents clicking their cameras as the children’s faces light up with the joy for being up close and personal to a lamb,’
Children will also be able to get a chance to have a cuddle with some of the smaller resident animals at the daily ‘Pet’s Corner’ session and take home some magical memories.
The world famous family attraction will also have a combination of winter fun on the half term timetable for all to enjoy. Visitors have a go at attempting to break the record for staying on top of our sensational snowboarding simulator and claw their way to the top of the Winter Challenge leader board. For those not so keen on a challenge they can pull on a pair of skates and glide around the skating rink showing off their moves to family and friends or enjoy a ride on the winter toboggan ride.
Younger children can enjoy Ewetopia, our massive indoor heated play area, on the selection of great slides and imaginative soft play climbing areas, tumble towers, mazes and obstacles which is heated during the winter. Parents can either play with the children or unwind with a coffee and watch the children from a safe distance. The play area is supervised with CCTV and alarms on the doors, allowing parents to relax in the knowledge that their children are safe and secure.
The BIG Sheep’s ‘Sheepy Shop’ will be open for business as usual with an Aladdin’s Cave full of unusual and quirky gifts for all occasions and many items will be reduced for our end of winter sale. Country Life, the BIG Sheep’s brewery will also be open for visitors to sample a range of some of Devon’s finest ales.
The BIG Sheep Shows, will as usual, put a smile on everyone’s face and ALL our visitors will have a half term day out full of fun, frolics, love and laughter with all thoughts of school banished.
