The best rainy day family days out in North Devon

19th July 2019

As the good old English weather can let us down sometimes you might be looking for something to do whilst also staying dry on a rainy day in Devon! We’ve compiled six of the best rainy days to keep your family entertained on a day out in North Devon.

Ilfracombe Aquarium

Aquariums are an ideal place to escape to on a rainy, drizzly day.  Visitors to the Ilfracombe Aquarium will enjoy a unique zoned journey from the source of an Exmoor stream, down the river to an estuary, a local rockpool, harbour, coast and out to Lundy Island and it’s unique marine reserve.

You’ll be glad it rained, as you entertain your children with free quiz trails, extensive interpretation and presentations from experienced fish keeper guides.  Demonstrations and interactive opportunities are all available throughout the day, at North Devon’s top Aquarium

Barnstaple Heritage Centre

Museums and Heritage Centres offer much more than just a place to take shelter on a rainy day.  Barnstaple Heritage Centre offers great entertainment for the whole family, with a fantastic hands on interactive exhibition, games, quizzes, brass rubbings, and children’s costumes to dress up in! It is open all year, and is reasonably priced, making it a great location for a fun family day out that won’t break the bank.

Experience Saxon life as you travel back in time and see what’s for sale at the Medieval Market.  Listen to merchants trading at the Tome Stone, and escape from the enemy as the Civil War reaches the town! You can also explore the more genteel 18th century and tread the boards with John Gray’s Beggar’s Opera. There are missing mice to find and a Heritage Trail to follow through to the Floral Arch.

Scott Cinemas Barnstaple

Enjoy a cosy day out at Scott Cinemas in Barnstaple and forget all about the rain as you immerse yourself in a great family movie.  The atmosphere of going to the cinema with the family to watch a movie together is very different from watching it at home. Scott Cinema in Barnstaple is a 1930’s cinema (with a bar!) and 4 modern screens showing the latest releases and live theatre broadcasts. Enjoy a great family experience with Scott’s enormous screens, realistic sound effects and stunning visuals.

Northam Burrows

Chuck on a pair of wellies and a waterproof jacket, and head to Northam Burrows for a great day of family fun. If you’re a family who enjoys walks and wildlife, Northam is a wildlife paradise, with a huge and diverse range of natural habitats, salt marshes, expanse grassland, rocky shores, sand dunes and coastal birds.

For the full experience start and end in Appledore, walk through Northam, around the Burrows between the dunes and the sea, and follow the coast back to Appledore. Plus, take in the history as well as the views on the ancient battleground where Vikings are said to have been slaughtered.

The BIG Sheep

The BIG Sheep is one of Devon’s most popular all-weather family attractions in Devon and is the place to visit on a rainy day.  No matter what the weather, this award-winning family attraction is guaranteed to be the highlight of your holiday. Come rain or shine, The BIG Sheep has an action-packed programme of rides, shows, animals and indoor play to keep everyone in the family entertained.

At The BIG Sheep the majority of attractions are undercover. Ewetopia indoor playground is particularly popular on wet days as it’s suitable for both adults and children. The live shows during the day in the summer are either inside the show arena which has seating for 250 people or there are shelters for you to watch the shows from around the park. The nursery barn, the brewery and distillery are also undercover.
