The Tarka Trail

There’s no need to bike all 30 miles of this traffic-free route through the backdrop to Henry Williamson’s classic story; many families just plump for the six miles from Torrington to Bideford. Along this flat section you may spot deer, rabbits, squirrels, otters, kingfishers and many other species of wildlife, flower and fauna.  Take a picnic or park up your bike and take a gentle stroll through the Little White town of Bideford and enjoy lunch in many of the or hope on a bus on Bideford Quay and visit The Big Sheep, North Devon’s favourite family attraction.

Hire a bike from Adam or Colin at Torrington Cycle Hire and they will give you some great Tarka Trail tips.  The cycle hire provides a range of hybrid and mountain bicycles, tandems, buggies and tagalongs.  They also also have an adult Tricycle and two wheeled tagalong for disabled. A rucksack containing a bike pump, puncture repair kit and lockcome complete with all bikes and cycle helmets are provided free of charge for children.

Take the family to the beautiful RHS Garden Rosemoor for a gentle stroll around these exquisite gardens – see the stunning roses, walk amongst the shrubs and the trees, and simply enjoy the outdoors. This a great place for parents to introduce their children to the wonders of gardening bio-diversity while enjoying an active day out.

Your cheeky monkeys will love The Brash –  an action-packed natural play area under tine pine trees, featuring climbing structures, a sandpit, a slide and bug magnifiers. The “Green Ship”, with its standing see-saw and spiro-giro, is perfect for older kids. Meanwhile, your younger adventurers can climb the living willow sculptures and practice their balance on the stepping logs.

Pick up a free seasonal trail map at the entrance, follow the clues and get a prize at the end.

Crabbing in Appledore

Appledore is one of the prettiest fishing villages in North Devon with an attractive maze of winding cobbled streets lined with the prettiest of pastel-coloured houses, decorated with cheery hanging baskets and a scattering of lobster pots. Families can spend hours of lively fun on the quay side fishing for crabs.

Crabbing tips

•Half fill a bucket with sea/river water and put some bacon in it for the crabs that you have caught.
•Attach your bait to the string.
•Lower your line into the water (keeping hold of one end) until it is slack or loose (when it has reached the bottom).
•Wait patiently.
•Bring up your line slowly and have your net ready to scoop up your crabs into the bucket.
•If you want to pick up the crabs, handle them carefully and pick them up from the back so you don’t get nipped by their pincers.
•Always return the crabs to their natural habitat before you leave.

Rock Pooling in Westward Ho!

Westward Ho!  Is the perfect place for rock pooling plus it’s a perfect way to get kids engaged with nature. The rock pools in Westward Ho! are really easy to access and are teeming with life, especially in the summer months. Clambering across the rocks will keep all the family fit.  If you tire yourselves out, you can sit quietly around one you will see so much going on. Shrimps appear and if you put your hands in gently, they will explore your fingers, crabs will walk past, blennys will swim out, you may see a hermit crab, winkles will start to move and a lot more too. It’s only by sitting quiet and studying, that you get to see the best bits of the rock pools.

Family Walks

The walk from Abbotsham Cliffs Green Cliff is a stunning coastal walk that is suitable for family groups of all ages.   Families can enjoy a day out on the beach at Westward Ho! or take a trip to nearby famous family attraction, the BIG Sheep before enjoying a lovely end of day walk along this beautiful stretch of coastline.   This is one of North Devon’s favourite family walks.  Immerse yourselves in the wildlife, flower and fauna and take in the spectacular views across the sea to Lundy.  A truly unique family experience.
